No Excise activity during Little 5 weekend

Posted in Activity

State excise police made no arrests and issued no citations on campus this Little 5 weekend.

Excise police issued their only formal warning of the weekend in Greencastle to Hoods and Capers, whose beer garden was not in compliance with state standards.

In contrast, the Little 500 weekend at Indiana University in Bloomington a week ago brought 271 arrests and 258 tickets for alcohol violations.

Lt. Kevin Akers, who oversees the state excise district that includes Putnam County, didn’t know how many excise officers were in Greencastle over the weekend but said they were largely patrolling by car rather than on foot and in plainclothes.

Still, many students...

Reimagining a revitalized hub of activity

Posted in Activity

WAILUKU – A grocery store in the heart of Wailuku town was the No. 1 request among those who participated in public workshops earlier this year to envision what the old town could be for the islands next generation.

People really miss Ookas (Super Market), said County Planner Erin Wade, about the longtime large, family-owned store in town that closed in 2005. (But) the model of Ookas isnt going to work for Wailuku (now); it was too big of a market.

Wade said a more urban market model or a smaller-scale grocer similar to Pukalani Superette could work with its smaller store and prepared foods. Outdoor seating to partake in the prepared grinds is also envisioned for Wailuku.

Growth in factory

activity slows in Texas

Texas factory activity increased in April but more slowly than in March, the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas said Monday in its monthly Texas Manufacturing Outlook Survey. Employment grew, but at a much slower pace than in previous months, it said.

The bank said 19 percent of employers reported hiring workers and 7 percent reported layoffs. The index of hours worked declined, the first negative reading in eight months. Expectations of future business conditions were less optimistic.
